Ana Maria Millán – Solo exhibition Witte de With

.

For nearly two decades, Ana María Millán has created work with people who have a strong inclination or expertise in visual culture, regardless of whether they’re directly involved in the field of contemporary art. Relatedly, underpinning her work is an exploration of the ways in which historical narratives are socialized through images, especially in comics, movies, and video games. The latter is what motivated the artist to address the uses of fantasy in gaming and Live Action Role Play communities.
Within the realm of fantasy, where subaltern groups may feel more at home than in reality, Millán searches for agents who expressly intend to re-signify our present, approaching animation as a tool to invent, and at times simply claim, a meaningful space in this world. This exhibition especially showcases Millan’s work on the subject. It includes animations and watercolors pertaining to comics and games, which portray people she engaged with while creating this body of work in her native Colombia, in Mexico, where she temporarily resided, and in Germany, where she currently lives.
